In the last few blog articles, I wrote about how some have blamed cows for global warming. Of course, that’s not the cows’ fault. It’s the way they are raised on industrial farms.

Cattle on sustainable, grass-fed farms like Acabonac Farms help the environment, not hurt it.

Grass-fed cattle operations help with carbon sequestration in the soil. They also help to create stronger, healthier grass and foliage in the local environment. 

How you buy your meat impacts the environment and the world around us.

Today, I want to talk briefly about another issue where grass-fed cattle make a difference: clean water. I touched on this last time but wanted to go into a bit more detail. 

We use regenerative practices such as rotational grazing, which involves moving cattle from one pasture to another, giving the grass and foliage a chance to recover and regrow. This dense, strong grass and foliage traps more carbon - tens of thousands of pounds of carbon - in the soil. That more than offsets any methane released by cattle, leading to cleaner air.

But another benefit is that healthier grass and foliage means we absorb and hold more water in our pastures each year. 

This means less water runoff from our farm, meaning less soil runoff into streams and other waterways. That’s not the case with industrial farms, where due to their farming techniques, topsoil and chemicals run off the pastures and into waterways (needless to say, we also DO NOTuse chemicals on our pastures at Acabonac Farms).

Cleaner water is just another way that grass-fed beef is better for the environment. That’s in addition to the fact that grass-fed beef is more nutrient dense and healthier for you to eat.
